Venice, Florence & Rome with Jacksonville University Alumni & Friends

9 days
We’ve picked three iconic cities at the pulse of Italy’s vibrant culture, both past and present. Venice brings romance to the forefront, with sprawling Baroque palaces and meandering, gondola-dotted canals. The Renaissance is tangible in Florence, where the presence of the world’s greatest artists can still be felt. And in Rome, history is ever-present, from the crumbling Colosseum to the Forum. The people, the food, the way of life—experience what Italy is all about as you make your way from one city to the next.

Passport & visa requirements

  • In order to enter Italy, U.S. and Canadian citizens need a valid passport with an expiration date extending at least six months beyond the date of reentry.
  • We recommend having at least one blank passport page for entry stamps.
  • There is no visa required for U.S. or Canadian citizens.
  • If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact your destination country’s consulate for your specific entry requirements.

Tour pace

  • You will walk for about 2 hours daily across mostly flat terrain, including cobblestone streets, with few hills or stairs.
  • Travelers should be healthy enough to participate in all included walks without assistance. Adding optional excursions may increase the total amount of walking on your tour.
  • You should feel comfortable managing your own baggage at times, as well as stepping between boats and uneven docks.
  • If you have any mobility concerns or physical restrictions, please contact our Customer Experience Team.

Transportation & arrival information

  • Round-trip flights booked through Go Ahead arrive in Venice and depart from Rome (or Naples on the tour extension). A Go Ahead representative will meet you at the airport and take you to your hotel. Please remain in the arrival lounge, as the representative might be escorting one of your fellow travelers to the boat at the time of your arrival.
  • Transfers to and from the airport at your destination are included for travelers who have purchased their flights through Go Ahead. Travelers who purchase their own flights may request airport transfers with Go Ahead for an additional cost.
  • Water taxi rides in Venice are included in the price of your tour.
  • All other included transportation on this tour is by private motor coach.

Baggage allowance

  • Airlines have varying weight restrictions on baggage. Some airlines may impose additional charges if you choose to check any baggage; be advised that you are responsible for any such costs.
  • Contact your airline for baggage size and weight restrictions for your flight, but please note that Go Ahead travelers are restricted to one checked bag per person due to storage limitations on motor coaches and other transfers, which may include train connections or flights.
  • One carry-on bag of 45 total inches (length + width + height) is also permitted.
  • Make sure you label your baggage and keep valuables, medication and documents in your carry-on bag.

Clothing & packing tips

  • We recommend packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered to accommodate varying temperatures, as well as a light jacket or rainwear.
  • A sturdy pair of walking shoes or sneakers is recommended for sightseeing.
  • You may want to pack dressier attire if you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance.
  • It is preferable not to visit churches or other religious sites with bare legs and shoulders (and entrance may be denied on this basis).

Health

  • There are no major health risks associated with traveling to Italy.
  • At least 60 days prior to departure, check with your doctor or healthcare provider for the latest updates and entry requirements, or visit the Center for Disease Control and Prevention website at cdc.gov.
  • If you have medication that you take daily, be sure you have enough for each day of the tour as well as any possible delays encountered.
  • If you have dietary restrictions and/or food allergies please notify Go Ahead at least 30 days prior to departure by logging in to My Account and updating your traveler info. To update this information closer to your departure date, please call our Customer Experience Team.

Cuisine

  • Venice and Northern Italy are known for flavorful meats and pastries.
  • Tuscany is world-famous for its wine, oil, sauces and pasta. Menus favor subtle, lighter pastas and desserts made with nuts, fruit and honey. Try a dish featuring the region’s Chianina beef, perhaps the most prized breed of cattle in all of Italy. For wine, popular Tuscan reds include Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, which are primarily made from the Sangiovese grape. Well-known white wines are also made around the San Gimignano region.
  • Roman food is typically freshly prepared and varies depending on the season. Must-try bites include cacio e pepe (a simple dish of pasta, cheese and pepper) and supplí (a fried rice ball similar to Sicily's arancini).
  • For more authentic meals, try local trattorias, small restaurants set away from the main piazzas. A typical Italian meal includes wines and the occasional beer, followed by a few sips of after-dinner drinks like grappa or limoncello

Electricity & air conditioning

  • Italy operates on the European standard 220-240 volts and use Types C, F or L plugs with two or three small, round pins.
  • We recommend packing a universal adapter, as well as a voltage converter if you plan on using your own hairdryer or other device without a built-in converter.
  • The strength of the air conditioning in European hotels is often not as strong or as cool as what you might be used to in the U.S. or Canada. When air conditioning is available, it is usually regulated seasonally and controlled centrally by the hotel.
  • Your hotel may provide hairdryers, irons and other small appliances. However, these amenities cannot be guaranteed.

Connectivity

  • Wi-Fi is available in most hotels, though some charges may apply.
  • There is no Wi-Fi on any of the motor coaches.
  • Please contact your mobile service provider for information on roaming charges.

Time zones

  • Italy is one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and six hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time (EST).
  • When it’s noon in New York, it’s 6pm on tour.

Currency

  • You will use the euro on this tour.
  • Better rates of exchange are usually available overseas, although it’s worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive.
  • We strongly advise that you take debit/bank cards and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed.
  • You can use most debit/credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
  • Inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans so that they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.
  • International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one debit or credit card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.

Tipping

  • At the conclusion of your tour, it’s customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.
  • We recommend tipping the equivalent of $7USD/CAD to $10USD/CAD per person per day for your Tour Director and the equivalent of $3USD/CAD per person per day for your driver.
  • If applicable, we also recommend the equivalent of $2USD/CAD per local guide.
  • Tips can only be paid in cash.

Purchasing excursions on tour

  • Most optional excursions will be available for purchase while you are on tour.
  • Your Tour Director will only accept cash (in USD only), Visa or MasterCard as payment for optional excursions.
  • Please be advised that if you pay for an excursion by credit card while on tour, it may take up to three months for your card to be charged.
  • Some optional excursions may only be purchased in advance. See page four of your tour itinerary for more information.

Museums in Florence

  • If you are interested in visiting any of Florence's many museums during your free time, we recommend that you make reservations in advance. See uffizi.org for the Uffizi Gallery or accademia.org for the Accademia Gallery. Please note that the museums are closed on Mondays.

Wonderful!

This trip was fabulous. Just needed more time. Super terrific city guides! Bus drivers that know their stuff! All good! Would have preferred more "old World" hotels in Rome and Florence - as we did have in Venice. GoAhead is always ahead of the game by knowing where the best places are and arranging ahead of time about getting into those places. Was the perfect trip for showing off Italy to my children. Thank you to one and all - before and during. Made my 80th birthday magic!

Wow - thank you for your review, Patricia! We are so honored to spend your birthday with you on our Venice, Florence, and Rome itinerary. We will be sure to pass along your praise and thanks to the appropriate parties, but hope you know that it was our pleasure. Go Ahead looks forward to your next adventure!

3 city Italian tour

Unfortunately, our tour included a "group within the group" with a self-appointed tour director who had recruited 15 persons for this tour from her home town. The rest of our group was excluded from many of their activities, as this informal leader arranged parallel tours for her "group only" and claimed she was able to do them at a lower cost than Go Ahead Tours. This created an element of "exclusivity" as those outside of her group were not invited. In the past, we sensed a "bonding" with fellow tourists when we have gone on tours. That was not the case this time. This being said, the tour director, Daniele, was super. He was knowledgeable, helpful and responded to all of our requests and needs. We would definitely recommend any tour guided by him! However, his role was undermined by this informal leader, but he handled it extremely well. We would recommend that Go Ahead Tours establish guidelines to prevent interference from external sources. This would help to promote a better experience for all.

Thank you for your review! We regret that the group dynamic did not meet your expectations. A representative from our Quality team has reached out to you to obtain more information. We are glad to hear that you enjoyed your experience with Daniele however! Thank you for traveling with Go Ahead!

great trip to Italy

We had a wonderful trip to Venice, Florence and Italy. The tour directors - Arlette and Daniele - were excellent. Took good care of us, were organized, offered options. If we opted to do something the group was not doing, they made sure we knew details about it - such as time, expense, how to get there etc. Nice balance of planned items and free time. Highly recommend it.

We're so happy you enjoyed your time in Italy, Victoria! Thank you for traveling with Go Ahead tours- we hope to see you on another tour with us in the future!

2017 Italy

Our overall tour director was wonderful. Well versed and very personal to all on tour. Gabriella Graziotti should be commended for outstanding service. Late in tour we had a site tour leader in the Vatican which was in my opinion not very effective. First of all the Vatican provided audio equipment was substandard. The Vatican Tour lead spoke very quickly and almost showing off her knowledge. I would have preferred Gabriella leading the tour as she was always approachable and keep the group together. I would choose Go Ahead for my next trip as I believe Go Ahead is quite professional. V/R

Dear Traveler, Thank you very much for your thoughtful feedback. We’re so glad that you enjoyed this tour, as well as the expert guidance of your Tour Director. We regret to learn that your experience at the Vatican didn’t meet your expectations, particularly the audio equipment and the explanations provided by your local guide. In terms of the audio equipment, we will be sure to notify our Operations team that you feel they need improvement. With regard to your Vatican guide, we provide local guides at particular points in the tour for various reasons. In some cases, such as at the Vatican, guides need a special certification in order to conduct tours there. Therefore, we are required by law to use Vatican-approved guides. With that said, we appreciate your feedback on this aspect of the tour, and we will be sure to communicate it to our team internally. Again, thank you for sharing your experience with us. We look forward to welcoming you on tour again!

Not as good as I had hoped

Go Ahead set the bar high with my previous tour of Ireland. This was just not up to the standards set by that previous tour! The hotels were OK. The tour provided dinners were also just OK. I was not wowed by much on the tour, to be honest. Also, travel issues with Delta (who I did not want to travel with to begin with.) Not just for me & my companions, but several others on the tour had issues with Delta. I highly recommend Go Ahead rethink that partnerlship.

Dear Rebecca, We regret that this tour didn’t meet your expectations, and we will be sure to let our Operations team know that you feel the hotels and meals could use improvement. Regarding your airline experience, we are sorry that it was not a positive one. Go Ahead and the airlines are entirely separate entities, so unfortunately we do not have any control over the flight experience. The reality of air travel is that there is a chance of delay, cancellation, or various inconveniences from time to time, as there are innumerable factors which affect arrival and departure schedules (i.e. weather, mechanical issues, etc.). Delta is one of the major airlines and the oldest operating in the United States. Therefore, it is important to remember that you can encounter these issues with virtually any airline. Again, we are sorry to learn that your flight experience tainted your time on tour. We do hope that you will travel with us again.

Wonderful Italy

As I tell others about my tour I realize just how wonderful it was. The whole experience when we finally were able to join the tour was terrific. However, there were several glitches prior to joining the tour, the primary one was not being met at the airport upon arrival. This was caused by our opting to add the Sorrento portion and except for purchasing our air fare (which the company did for us at additional cost), we were left to our own devices. I cannot say enough good about our tour director and the various tour guides that met us at and showed us around the various cities (Venice, Florence and Rome). Our guides, accommodations and transportation once we joined the tour were excellent. It was a trip of a lifetime.

Thank you for the feedback Betty. We are happy to hear that you enjoyed your trip! Thank you for traveling with Go Ahead!

"Amazing" doesnt touch how I felt about this tour!

I took 21 people on the most amazing vacation ever. We should start with the heart and soul of the tour, Emilio! Emilio was our tour guide and to say "he went above and beyond" doesn't begin to give him enough credit. He made my daughters birthday perfect. He had everyone sing to her at dinner then bought her a bracelet in Venice that she wears daily now. That's a huge compliment from a 14 year old girl! He went out of his way in Rome to fulfill a dream for my brothers fire fighter brothers. They were intending to trade patches with the Rome fire department which is done here in The States. Emilio stayed on this goal the whole trip and produced unique polo shirts from fire fighters in Rome! What a treasure! Emilio gave us tips the entire trip about local things to see and do during free time. We had a highlighted map in Rome and he sat individually with each person to make sure they knew how to use the Metro and get around. He stuck with us even when we were with a local tour guide being involved in our tour. My 11 year old son (who doesn't like long flights) stated he will go anywhere as long as Emilio would be there because "hes fun!". The quality of the food included in the trip exceeded my expectations. There was plenty of food for everyone. The hotels were so cute in Venice and Florence. We all had fun comparing the different perks of each of our rooms! In Rome, our hotel was in a perfect spot. All the local guides were knowledgeable and seemed to really enjoy their job. My group of 21 was filled with so many different age groups, education levels, and walks of life. Of all those people everyone complimented the time they had! All in all, I would definitely go again on this exact trip!

Hi Lesly! Wow, we absolutely loved reading your review! It’s fantastic to hear that this was the most amazing vacation you’ve experienced and that you attribute a lot of its success to your Tour Director. We’re thrilled that he made your daughter feel special on her birthday and that he went above and beyond to ensure everyone was able to fulfill their travel dreams. We will be sure to share your kind feedback with him. It’s great to know that everything else exceeded your expectations, including meals and accommodations provided throughout the trip. Thank you for taking the time to review your tour, Lesly. We look forward to welcoming you on tour again next year!

Great introduction to Italy!

My wife and I recently returned from our first trip with GOAHEAD, and could not have been happier! From the time that we booked our trip everything was taken care of, and we received nothing, but professional and courteous service from everyone that we had contact with. The tour of Italy was incredible! In addition to our GOAHEAD Tour Guide, the local guides were very well versed, and informative regarding each city that we travelled to. The hotels that we stayed in were very comfortable, and better than we had expected, but are not up to the same standards that we receive when we travel in the US. The food, breakfast and the dinners were excellent! In addition to the meals that were included, the guides provided us with recommendations regarding restaurants in each city. If you are interested in the taking part in the optional tours, take them. The prices are reasonable as they include travel to and from the site, entry fee and a local guide. Also, when you take these optional tours you have access away from the general public. The people in Italy were exceptional. Everyone that we spoke with was courteous, and helpful when we needed directions, or had questions regarding their area of Italy. Currently, we are looking into our next tour with GOAHEAD, and are having trouble trying to decide on where to go? I would not hesitate to recommend taking this, or any other tour that GOAHEAD offers. Great experience, and great memories!!!

Hi Frank! We’re thrilled that you and your wife enjoyed exploring Venice, Florence, & Rome! From start to finish, it’s fantastic to hear that you felt everything went smoothly and that all of your interactions with Go Ahead staff were helpful and professional. We appreciate your feedback on the various aspects of the tour, such as the meals and accommodations. We’re also glad to learn that you feel this tour provides a good value. We think so, too! Thank you for taking the time to provide thoughtful and detailed feedback, Frank. We can’t wait to see where you and your wife go next!

Need more time at attractions!

I really enjoyed the tour! The tour director Barbara was incredible and all the other tour guides were amazing as well. My only complaint would be having more time at locations we visited on the tour such as The Colosseum, The Vatican Museum, etc.. We would waste time in a small area hearing the tour guide talk then be told you have 15 minutes on your own to explore. There was sooo much more we could have seen if we were weren't stuck with a guide the entire time. I would love to be taken to the site and explore on my own for an hour or so it would have been better time spent!

Hello! We’re so glad you enjoyed your tour! We also appreciate your feedback on your Tour Director and local guides. We pride ourselves in having such a wonderful, knowledgeable staff! Regarding time at the Colosseum and the Vatican, we regret that these visits didn’t quite meet your expectations. While we understand wanting more time for independent exploration, it’s important to note that these sites are heavily regulated from both a preservation and safety standpoint. The Vatican, for example, receives tens of thousands of tourists every day, and in order to do so, visitors must maintain a certain pace while going through. Besides being accompanied by a local guide, the advantage to experiencing these sites with Go Ahead is that you are able to skip the extremely long lines, which many visitors wait multiple hours in for entry. We appreciate your feedback in this area, and we have communicated it to our team internally. Again, we’re thrilled that you enjoyed your time in Venice, Florence, & Rome, and we can’t wait to see where you’ll go next!

Great tour!

I choose the trip because my boyfriend could only take a short amount of time off. The tour company is amazing but I suggest to take the longer version. The hotel in Venice and on the coast were amazing. The hotel rooms were on the smaller size, in Rome the hotel was really far from city center. I didn't like the family dinners not being in the hotel, and they were not as good as the ones on the Eastern European trip. The tour director Paula I think was just ok, she was far too unsure of herself, did not know how to demand attention, and her advice on where to eat near the horrible placed Rome hotel was a huge let down. She did not feel as organized or knowledgable as Paul on the Eastern European trip.

Dear Traveler, We’re glad that overall you had a good experience on tour and during your interactions with Go Ahead staff. We appreciate your constructive feedback on various components of the tour, such as your hotels and meals. We will be sure to share this feedback with our Operations team for evaluation. Regarding your Tour Director, we regret that her efforts didn’t quite meet your expectations, and we will be sure to share your comments with her supervisor. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We hope to welcome you and your boyfriend on tour again.

Wonderful Trip!

I took this trip with my 15 year old daughter, we loved every minute of it. Barbara, our tour guide was absolutely terrific. From beginning to end there were no worries about the details, no anxiety being in a foreign country, etc. It helps to have at least some basics of the language, but you can certainly get by only speaking english as most Italians learn speak it. Pack light!!! You don't need as much stuff (esp. clothes) as you think you do. Loved the experience so much that I booked a trip to Paris for next year with both my girls.

Thank you for the review, Lisa! We appreciate your thoughtful feedback on your tour through Venice, Florence and Rome. It is our pleasure to take care of those details for you and we are eager to head abroad with you again soon. Happy travels!

Amazing trip!

My husband and I just returned from our tour to Venice, Florence and Rome. This was the most spectacular vacation we have ever taken. Each city had its own unique beauty. The food was phenomenal and we had the pleasure of sharing this experience with a great group of people. Our tour director, Barbara, was absolutely amazing. She was so knowledgeable and organized - and had a wonderful sense of humor. I will recommend Go Ahead Tours to family and friends as THE tour company to use for their trips. We can't wait to book our next trip back to Italy and experience the southern part of this beautiful country.

Sept trip to Italy

This tour company knows exactly what they are doing. I love how they mix the walking tours, with "down days"..This allows for flexibility as well as being able to take the optional excursions..I would use this company again in a heartbeat!!

Hi Jackie! We're glad you enjoyed the balance of pacing throughout your tour. We're especially happy to hear that you would travel with us again in the future! We look forward to when you do.

Venice, Florence, Rome

This trip was very well planned. Our Tour Director, Katia, was excellent. She made sure that everything ran very smoothly. The group meals were fun, there was free time in each city and there were many choices for extra excursions. The local guides in each city were very good. Overall, I would give the tour an excellent rating.

Hi Joan! We're glad you felt the trip was designed well and that your Tour Director made sure everything came together seamlessly. Thank you for your stellar review! We hope to welcome you on tour again.

Trip of a Lifetime

This trip was something I always was hoping I could do, and so glad I did. Our guide was wonderful, very accommodating. The side tours we did were well worth every penny. Would love to go back. I will give a heads up though, there is a lot more than 2 hours of walking a day and very few places to sit. Wear very good walking shoes. Venice is a lot of walking up and down the bridges, but so beautiful and worth it. The buses were very comfortable. Take this trip, you will love it.

Hello! We’re glad you did this tour, too! We appreciate your feedback on the various aspects of the tour. It’s great to hear that you feel the optionals were enjoyable, and we’re thrilled that you would love to go back. You offer wonderful advice regarding packing comfortable walking shoes, a necessary item on all Go Ahead tours. In terms of the tour pace, we have an approximate 2 hours daily listed on the itinerary page because that is the average amount of time required to participate in the official tour, so it excludes the amount of walking time on your own. We agree that exploring Venice, Florence, and Rome is totally worth it! Thank you for your review, and we hope to welcome you on tour again.

Wonderful

Loved the tour we had a group of 9 of us that traveled together. It was a wonderful experience. Want to go back except next time add an additional day at each stop. Everything I dreamed of and more. All the guides were knowledgable of the area which were visiting. Go head tour assisted us when we extended our vacation and stayed a few days longer and provided us with some very useful information. Would recommend them to others no plan on using them again for future travel plans.

Hi Lucy! To learn that this tour was 'everything you dreamed of and more' makes us very happy. We're so glad you would recommend traveling with Go Ahead, and we thank you for your great feedback. Let us know when you'd like to plan your next trip!

Review

This was my first time in Italy. The tour was wonderful and all of the important sites were seen. The optional tours (Vatican and Tuscany)are well worth taking. The free days and time were just enough for us.The hotels are beautiful and my favorite was in Venice (Giorgione). The only hotel that was too far from the sites was in Rome. You had to take public transportation or taxi. And this location was in a residential area,so there wasn't too much to walk to.Our tour director,Stefania Arena was wonderful and knowledgeable. We had a wonderful group to share this experience.Food was magnificent.Definitely worth the money.Already looking to book another trip next year.

Hi Eileen! We’re so glad you feel like you saw all the important sites for your first visit to Italy. We’re also pleased to learn that most of the accommodations and optionals met your expectations. We regret that you felt your hotel in Rome could have been located closer to the major sites, and we will be sure to communicate this to our Operations team for further evaluation. We appreciate your feedback on your Tour Director, and we’re so glad her expertise was a great resource for you throughout your trip. Thank you for your review, and we look forward to your next tour!

Wonderful Tour

This was my first visit to Italy. Seeing Venice, Florence and Rome was a fantastic experience. Our tour guide Stephania was very pleasant and very informative as were the local guides. My cousin Eileen and I traveled together and we are planning our next Italy experience for next year. I have recommended Go Ahead Tours to my friends and I hope they take my advice.

Hi Mary! We are so grateful to have your recommendation. It’s wonderful to know that you enjoyed your first tour of Italy, a country with so much to offer. We appreciate your feedback on your Tour Director, and we will be sure to share it with her supervisor. Thank you for your review, and we look forward to welcoming you and Eileen on your next tour of Italy!

Amazing Trip.

Allora! We just returned from our 9 Day Italy experience. This trip was everything we envisioned it to be and more. Our land tour director was Stefania, who was amazing! She really was a beautiful person to tour with. Italy is so rich in culture, creativity, and history. Venice was every bit a romantical city that we enjoyed. Florence and Rome were also incredible. We added on the San Gimignano tour, and honestly would recommend for everyone to experience this incredible tour and area. The true postcard like scenery will take your breath away. Our only negative on this day was that it was not longer. We would have loved to have an entire day and not just a few hours to explore and really walk around the village. My biggest advise for this tour is for those that are not used to walking and excersize that you begin some sort of daily walking a few months before or you will not be able to enjoy it to the fullest. Tossed our coin in the Trevi Fountain and planning our next trip.
